Interesting app released today for the iPhone. Word Lens is a free app that translates signs on-the-fly, and applies that translation to the image presented on the iPhone’s screen. Have a look at the video below—it’s amazing stuff. And yet another example of the death of traditional signage.

The free version currently just flips words around, but there’s also a Spanish-to-English and English-to-Spanish dictionary. I wonder how well it will deal with more script-based or pictographic style languages, such as Urdu or Mandarin?

This is simply amazing! What a transformation this could be for travel. The company I work for designs signs and are very excited to hear about this integration of technology in our industry. Thanks Shane for this post! Joyce Miller

If the app can also read out the information from signs, it would be very useful for people who are blind or have poor vision.
