Globe-trotting sign painter Mike Meyer is bringing his hand-lettering workshop to Australia in November, passing on his knowledge of the brush in Sydney, Melbourne and Newcastle. Hosted by local sign painters, these workshops will give participants a chance to learn from one of the masters, with brushes, paint, lettering and laughs in abundance. They follow hot on the heels of Mike’s recent European tour which took him to Italy, France, the Netherlands and the UK.

practice every day

Mike has always been a well-known face in the international sign painting community through his passionate involvement with Letterhead ‘meets’ as far apart as New Zealand and North Wales. He has even hosted a number of these sign painting conventions at his own shop in Mazeppa, Minnesota. His profile was then raised outside of this community through his appearance in the internationally-acclaimed film, Sign Painters, which has captivated audiences across the world.

Following the release of Sign Painters Mike was inundated with requests from people wanting to learn the traditional skills associated with painting letters. With only a handful of schools around the world providing structured learning of this type, Mike decided to develop a hand-lettering workshop so that he could pass on his knowledge and passion for the craft. Following the first workshop in New Zealand in November 2013, Mike has delivered over 25 events in 10 different countries.

The workshop takes participants through the basics of letter construction, first focussing on the gothic (block) alphabet and then moving on to casual and script letter forms. Everything starts with a pencil before moving on to learn about, and practise, brush technique. It’s all hands-on and everyone moves at their own pace with lots of personal input. The aim is to start a process of learning and self-critique that continues after the workshop ends. Some past participants have been so inspired by the workshop that they have subsequently quit their jobs to become sign painters.

Schedule of Workshops

  • 8-9 November: Pocket Design, Newcastle, NSW
  • 11-12 November: Jordan Signs, Sydney, NSW
  • 22-23 November: Industrial Art, Melbourne, VIC
